Gregory Ahss has been concertmaster of the CAMERATA Salzburg since 2012, a role he previously held with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and which he currently also fulfils with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. Gregory Ahss is a guest concertmaster with leading orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.
Gregory Ahss began taking his first violin lessons at the age of five at the Gnessin Music School in his native city of Moscow. After moving to Israel, he continued his training at the Israeli Conservatoire and the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv under Lena Mazor and Irina Svetlova, and eventually studied in the USA at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston under Donald Weilerstein. Whilst still a student, he founded the Tal Piano Trio, with whom he won first prize at the ‘Premio Trio di Trieste’ chamber music competition. Other partners of this passionate chamber musician in this field include Natalia Gutmann, Janine Jansen, Vilde Frang, Emmanuel Pahud, Gautier Capuçon, Nicolas Altstaedt, Sabine Meyer, Alexander Melnikov and Fazıl Say.
Gregory Ahss made his solo debut with the Orchestra Mozart Bologna, conducted by Claudio Abbado. His recording of Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante with the Orchestra Mozart and Abbado has been honoured with prestigious awards such as the “ICMA for Best Solo Concerto of 2015”. As a soloist, the violinist has also performed with conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Andrés Orozco-Estrada and Teodor Currentzis, as well as with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Symphony Orchestra and, of course, the CAMERATA Salzburg.
Gregory Ahss plays a violin by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume from 1870, which is on loan to him from the Tannberg Private Foundation.
