Saisonkonzert 1 Herausgehört

This concert opens our anniversary season, conducted by Finnegan Downie Dear, with an invitation to listen closely. For within these four works spanning three eras, one can discern astonishing connections – memories, premonitions, home and distant lands.

In his commemorative work for György Ligeti, György Kurtág looks back on a shared musical world. Béla Bartók’s ‘Divertimento’, composed in 1939 and a centrepiece of the CAMERATA’s repertoire, combines the folk music of his homeland with the dark omens of a time under threat.
Maurice Ravel , for his part, brings together Mozart, Basque sounds and jazz in his piano concerto – a dazzling blend brought to life by the piano virtuoso Alexandre Tharaud . And Mozart is also present in the work of Joseph Haydn: his Symphony in E flat major pays homage to his admired colleague whilst, at the same time, seeming to foreshadow Beethoven.

Four works, then, that look back, point forward and listen to one another across the centuries.
