Matthias Bäcker has been a member of the Camerata Salzburg since 2014.
He was born in Schwerin in 1971 and studied with Hans Werner Wätzig and Burkhard Glaetzner in Berlin and Leipzig. In 1994, he was accepted into the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s Academy, where he was taught by Hansjörg Schellenberger. At the same time, he was principal oboist with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado.
His first permanent engagements took him to the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and the National Theatre in Mannheim as principal oboist.
From 1999 to 2005, he held the same position at the Deutsche Oper Berlin under Christian Thielemann. Matthias Bäcker has been invited as a guest by numerous major orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Since 2015, he has held a guest contract as Associate Section Leader with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
He has won prizes at national and international competitions and performs as a soloist and chamber musician both at home and abroad.
Since 2005, Matthias Bäcker has been Professor of Oboe at the FRANZ LISZT University of Music in Weimar.
