The New York Times hails her as one of New York's most imaginative and astonishing sound creators, while Time Out New York dubs her "Brooklyn's post-millennial Mozart": the American composer Missy Mazzoli. Her concerto for violin and string orchestra, initially conceived for double bass, is inspired by the seemingly paradoxical phrase "Dark with Excessive Bright," a surreal depiction of God from John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost. Composed in 2018, the work engages in a dialogue with Mozart's myth-enshrouded Requiem on the 233rd anniversary of his death—a piece famously left unfinished and later completed by his student, Franz Xaver Süßmayr.
